STRYPER Frontman MICHAEL SWEET Talks Working With ELECTRA MUSTAINE - "I Think The World Will Be Hearing A Lot More About Her Very Soon"

In 2014, Stryper frontman Michael Sweet released his cover of the Neil Young classic “Heart Of Gold”, taken from his album I’m Not Your Suicide. The song and video features Electra Mustaine, the daughter of Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, as a guest vocalist. Sweet recently spoke with The Aquarian about Stryper’s current To Hell With The Devil 30th Anniversary tour and discussed working with Electra. Following is an excerpt from the interview.

Q: Your evolution as a musician has taken you in many different directions. Can you speak to your draw to country music when you collaborated with Electra Mustaine?

Sweet: “Yeah, I did. On the last album I always wanted to do the Neil Young song ‘Heart Of Gold’ because it’s one of my favorite songs. I love it, always have. And I wanted a female vocal on that song. I was considering different vocalists, and I came across Electra singing a song. I was very, very surprised, and I thought, ‘Wow, she’s really good.’ It just so happens that I am friends with Dave, so I reached out to him to ask about the possibility of having her sing. They were both very excited about that, and it just worked out. All the planets aligned, and that was it.

I’m so happy she did it because she did a fantastic job, and I’ve said since that I think the world will be hearing a lot about Electra, because she’s got a country career that she’s working on, songs, performing in Nashville and whatnot. She’s a really talented girl, and I think you’re going to hear a lot more about her very soon. She’s young, but working with people young like that helps to keep me young as well.”

Earlier this year, Electra Mustaine released a country cover of the Megadeth song “I Thought I Knew It All” which originally appeared on the 1994 album, Youthanasia. The official video is available below. Check out the song below along with the original Megadeth version.

Electra comments, saying her interpretation is for both country fans and disciples of the thrash titans:

“We thought it’d be a great tribute to Megadeth fans for all the years of support. I wanted to say thank you, because honestly if it weren’t for Megadeth fans, I wouldn’t be able to try to fulfill my dreams now. I thought, let’s show everyone this is where I come from, and yes, I am Dave Mustaine’s daughter, but look what I can do with it. We tried to make it organic, raw and vocally driven.”
