Ultimamente il nome Pest parrebbe andare di moda nel panorama estremo. Oltre ai qui recensiti finlandesi, esistono omonimi, di maggiore interesse musicale, sia in Germania che in Svezia. Questo “Hail The Black Metal Wolves Of Belial” è una raccolta dei lavori fin qui prodotti dalla band; ovvero demo e poco più. Ciò spiega la disomogeneità stilistica e di registrazione udibili all’interno del disco.
Le canzoni più recenti, in particolar modo, ci dicono che i Pest fanno di tutto per accostarsi alla corrente black metal più grezza e minimale. Non sorprende pertanto che il riffing abbia una forte componente thrash, segno della fascinazione per il black metal originario. Purtroppo i nostri, sebbene sguazzino intorno a tutti i cliché del genere, non riescono nell’intento di rievocare l’essenza di certe atmosfere care ai Celtic Frost o ai Bathory. Il songwriting risulta raramente incisivo; certe soluzioni sonore avrebbero potuto essere d’interesse una decina d’anni fa.
Sebbene qua e là ne disco si avverte una maggiore ricerca stilistica personale, nel complesso il disco non convince. L’affiorare, in alcune vecchie canzoni, di sonorità più death che black ci testimonia che la band parrebbe ancora alla ricerca di una strada ben precisa. Considerando che, dalle poche informazioni circolanti, i Pest potrebbero già non esistere più, non credo abbia molto senso investire tempo su di loro.
