BUCKCHERRY Frontman Says 'There's Not A Lot Of Risk Taking' And 'Diversity' In Rock Right Now

In a new interview with the “BREWtally Speaking” podcast, BUCKCHERRY frontman Josh Todd once again admitted that he gets a lot more inspiration from the current hip-hop scene than he does from new rock artists.

“I think hip-hop is really where there’s some crazy stuff happening — really great stuff,” he said (hear audio below). “Look at Chance The Rapper — he got, like — what? — three Grammys [with] no record deal, and he sold out the Hollywood Bowl. I went to that show, and I was, like, ‘This is unreal. I cannot believe this is happening.’ And so it’s very exciting.

“I have to tell you, rock is really in a weird place, because there’s not a lot of risk taking, there’s not a lot of diversity from band to band to band,” he continued. “If you look at the ’90s, you had these amazing frontmen — you had Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder, and the list goes on… Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain and you had Zack De La Rocha and Jonathan Davis — all these guys. It was, like, ‘Wow!’ It was incredible. And then the 2000s? I mean, you can name some, because you’re in this business, but the average person walking down the street, they don’t know anybody. And they’re not at award shows, they’re not at anything. And you go to hip-hop, and it’s super exciting. They’re being nasty and X rated, they’re saying whatever they wanna say, they’re making up their own language and their own stuff. And they’re putting out videos that are crazy. Like, have you seen the last Cardi B video? I watched that video and I was, like, ‘This is dope!'”

He added: “I need to be inspired. So I go where there’s inspiration.”

BUCKCHERRY‘s latest album, “Warpaint”, was released on March 8 via Century Media/RED Music. The 12-song disc, featuring 11 new BUCKCHERRY songs along with a cover of the NINE INCH NAILS classic “Head Like A Hole”, was produced by Mike Plotnikoff, whose last collaboration with the band was the platinum-certified album “15”.

BUCKCHERRY has announced the dates for leg two of its “Warpaint” North American tour. The trek starts on May 18 in Waco, Texas and runs through August 15 in Kansas City. On top of touring all major markets in the U.S., the band will visit ten Eastern Canadian cities on this run. JOYOUS WOLF, which supported BUCKCHERRY on leg one, will remain on the bill on most of the leg-two dates. BUCKCHERRY will also open for AEROSMITH in Shakopee, Minnesota and be direct support for NICKELBACK for two shows in Ravinia, Illinois.
