Un nuovo disco degli Anathema per me è sempre un evento e, dopo avere ascoltato l’anteprima, l’attesa per “Weather Systems” era davvero molto alta. “The Beginning And The End” è infatti un pezzo grandioso, emozionale, pieno di pathos e carico di quella nostalgia calda che mi ha fatto amare tanti dischi passati della band: mi aspettavo perciò che l’album si sarebbe mosso tutto su quelle tonalità, ritornando indietro almeno un pochino dalla solarità del disco precedente. In realtà l’anteprima non era per nulla rappresentativa, “Weather Systems” resta un lavoro decisamente “happy” e la doppietta iniziale, “Untouchable, Part 1” e “Untouchable, Part 2” lo mette subito in chiaro. Le atmosfere sono soffuse, la vibrazione è positiva, il cantato femminile è molto più presente che in passato: gli Anathema sono più sereni ora, e si sente. La classe resta comunque sempre notevole, inoltre rispetto al precedente “We’re Here Because We’re Here”, l’album mi è sembrato meno discontinuo, a parte i 9 minuti e 20 di “The Storm Before The Calm” che mi fanno sempre venire voglia di premere “skip” (anche perché dopo c’è “The Beginning And The End”).
Insomma, alla fine “Weather Systems” è un bell’album, non verrà ricordato come uno dei loro capolavori (non credo che ne produrranno più), ma in realtà gli Anathema li capisco. Si cresce, l'”angst” giovanile passa, lo vivo pure sulla mia pelle: quando ascolto i loro vecchi lavori mi ritrovo più a viverli nel ricordo che a “sentirli”. Quando ci si rasserena ci si stabilizza, si vive meglio, ma l’arte ne risente, ed è sicuramente più difficile esprimere le emozioni positive che quelle negative. “Weather Systems” è questo: una serena maturità.
