C’era molta attesa nei confronti di “Building An Empire” dopo che Steven Wilson dei Porcupine Tree (che ormai si infila dappertutto) aveva tessuto delle lodi sperticate riguardo ai Demians, one man band francese composta dal solo Nicolas Chapel. Al di là della sponsorizzazione, va dato atto a Nicolas di essere riuscito a realizzare completamente da solo un cd davvero interessante, contenente otto pezzi di prog rock che mescolano insieme i Riverside, i Porcupine Tree (come ci si poteva aspettare), i Pain Of Salvation più intimisti e gli Opeth acustici, gli Anathema – un po’ sempre gli stessi nomi, insomma… – ma anche i più inaspettati Nickelback. Nonostante tutti questi richiami (che ci sono e sono innegabili) il risultato finale è comunque abbastanza personale e credo che farà felici gli amanti delle sonorità presentate.
Non credo che i Demians siano quella band epocale che Steven Wilson dice, tuttavia “Building An Empire” è un debutto davvero solido e capace di farsi amare. Nell’attesa di una maturazione ancora più interessante abbiamo però già una realtà piuttosto solida e di classe.
