SYSTEM OF A DOWN singer Serj Tankian has released a new trailer for “Spitak”, a new drama about the catastrophic earthquake — also known as the Spitak earthquake — that shook Armenia on December 7, 1988 claiming several thousand lives.

Tankian scored the award-winning film, which was directed by Russian filmaker Alexander Kott.

“Spitak”, jointly produced by Armenia and Russia, tells the story of Gor, who left Armenia in search of a better life but now returns back after the earthquake in order to find his home and family. But it is too late. Everything is destroyed by the disaster, and he has to re-learn to love what he destroyed himself.

“It’s a really heavy film,” Serj told Rolling Stone. “[I wrote] a modern-sounding score with very light pianos and ethereal soundscapes for this one. It’s very dreamy, sometimes dark, sometimes bright.”

“Spitak – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” will be available on iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music and other global digital platforms on November 30.

In the movie, the director intentionally left scenes of horror behind the camera, focusing on the experience of the characters instead.

According to the Armenian National Committee of America, Kott described “Spitak” as “a requiem film,” through which he attempted to convey “the panic, despair, courage and heroism” of those who tried to find their home and family despite the harrowing circumstances immediately following the earthquake.

Prior to shooting, the director had decided that all the characters would speak in their native languages, thus the film is in Armenian, Russian and French.
