SEBASTIAN BACH Laments Lack Of Mystery Around Today's Rock Stars

Former SKID ROW singer Sebastian Bach was interviewed earlier this week on the SiriusXM show “Sway’s Universe”, hosted by MTV personality Sway Calloway. You can now watch the chat below.

Speaking about the importance of mystique in rock ‘n’ roll, and how the over-exposure of social media is making it impossible to build that mystique in today’s world, Bach said: “There’s less mystery, and you look at who has the most mystery, and it’s [GUNS N’ ROSES lead singer] Axl Rose, right? Who’s got the biggest tour in town? Like, who’s not on the Internet? Who’s got mystery still? Who sells out every time he plays? That guy does. I think there’s something to be said for mystery.”

Asked if the Internet has ruined it for rock stars in the 21st Century, Bach said: “Well, if you put too much out there, like, ‘I’m having cauliflower for lunch.’ I’m just saying, you’ve gotta have some mystery. I used to just blab about whatever — blah blah blah blah blah blah — thinking this is what I should do. And my manager [Rick Sales, who also manages SLAYER] goes, ‘Get off the Internet.’ And I’m, like, ‘Why?’ And he goes, ‘You put too much out there.’ I go, ‘It’s the Internet.’ He goes, ‘SLAYER has Slayer.com. They get a million hits a day. They’ve never been to the site.’ I go, ‘Okay. Slayer.com. They’ve never been there…’ [Laughs] So I kind of thought about that.”

He continued: “A long time ago, in the ’60s or whatever, when we were kids [and] when rockers were gods, we couldn’t fathom ever meeting, like, VAN HALEN. The whole culture now of meet-and-greet and get your picture and come backstage, and the lead singer holds your hand and leads you to your seat and gets you a Coke. ‘Doesn’t he know I’m here? Hey, I’m here! He’s a dick! He’s not out here right now? Doesn’t he know…?’ You couldn’t imagine, when I was a kid, meeting AC/DC. There wasn’t a special VIP package where I could hang out with them; that did not exist.”

Bach is currently promoting his long-awaited autobiography, “18 And Life On Skid Row”, which came out on December 6 via Dey Street Books (formerly It Books), an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. In the book, Bach is brutally frank in his description of life on the road and exploits with METALLICA, Ozzy Osbourne and GUNS N’ ROSES, among others.
