Metal Nation Radio host and Metal Wani editor in chief Owais “Vitek” Nabi recently conducted an interview with NIGHTWISH singer Floor Jansen. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

Asked for her opinion about bands like NIGHTWISH being lumped in the “female-fronted symphonic metal” category, Floor said: “Now there is already ‘symphonic metal’ behind it, so it narrows it down… It says a little more about what the music actually does.”

She continued: “There seems to sometimes be an entire genre called ‘female-fronted metal.’ ‘Oh, so you’re in a female-fronted metal band?’ ‘Oh, yeah? Am I?’ What on earth does that say? Because then REVAMP [Floor‘s side project] is a female-fronted metal band, and so is NIGHTWISH. But those bands don’t sound alike at all. ARCH ENEMY is a female-fronted metal band, but so is DELAIN. They don’t sound alike at all. The only thing they both are are metal bands, but the style within metal is so massively different that it doesn’t really say much whether there’s a girl singing or not. So it’s really not so important. Plus, to emphasize the difference in sex between men and women, I think we’ve had that time by now.”

Jansen added: “It’s not so surprising that there are more women in metal bands. And they’re not just fronting them. There are drummers and guitar players, bass players… So… I would say, get over it and just call it ‘symphonic metal.’ It doesn’t really [matter] who is singing.”

NIGHTWISH‘s new album, “Endless Forms Most Beautiful”, was made available on March 27 in Europe and March 31 in the U.S. via Nuclear Blast.

The “Élan” four-track single, which arrived on February 13, features the album version of the title cut, a radio edit and an alternate version of “Élan”, as well as the non-album bonus track “Sagan”.

The cover artwork for “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” was created by the band’s longtime collaborator Toxic Angel. Famed evolutionary biologist and atheist writer/leader Richard Dawkins appears as a guest on the effort.

Longtime NIGHTWISH drummer Jukka Nevalainen sat out the recording sessions for “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” due to health issues. He has sicne been replaced by Kai Hahto (WINTERSUN, SWALLOW THE SUN, TREES OF ETERNITY).

Jansen, who officially joined the band in 2013, made her live debut as the frontwoman of NIGHTWISH on October 1, 2012 at Showbox Sodo in Seattle, Washington.
