BLACK VEIL BRIDES Frontman: 'Writing Lyrics, To Me, Is About The Exchange Of Ideas And Things That I'm Experiencing Emotionally'

Sophie K of Kerrang! Radio conducted an interview with BLACK VEIL BRIDES vocalist Andy Biersack and drummer Christian “C.C.” Coma backstage at this year’s Download festival, which was held last weekend at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England. You can now watch the chat below.

Aaked if it was difficult for him to tackle tough issues in the lyrics for BLACK VEIL BRIDES‘ latest album, “Vale”, Biersack said: “I think our attempt has always been to represent the… the term ‘outcast’ is kind of thrown around a lot, but for us, we felt like we were on the fringe of society, we felt like we were different, and there’s always been a huge level of responsibility to try to represent those feelings in a way that was genuine and not pandering or trying to cash in on lonely kids. So, for when I’m writing lyrics, to me, it’s about the exchange of ideas and things that I’m experiencing emotionally, and if someone else can connect with that, that’s great. I never sit down with the idea of, ‘I’m gonna write a song for this sad kid,’ because I feel at that point you’re taking away the connection that you have with the audience.

“When I was a kid and I’d listen to ‘Born To Run’ or whatever, I wouldn’t think, ‘Oh, Bruce Springsteen‘s writing about me,’; I would think, ‘I’m from a small town. I wanna get out of here,’ all that stuff, [and it] meant something to me because it was a shared experience,” he said.

“I think, when it comes to ‘Vale’ or any of our material, the connection comes from all of us knowing instrinsically what it’s like to be that young kid who feels disenfranchised, and to be able to do this professionally… I mean, we tease and everything, but when we were first coming up, the feeling of revenge and ‘fuck you, we’re gonna do this’ was real,” Biersack added. “Now, as we get older, we’ve been more accepted, and we’re not going out there to moon everybody and flip everybody off, but I think the attitude is still there that we wanna show people that what we do is valid and that we care.”

BLACK VEIL BRIDES‘ fifth album, “Vale”, was released in January via Lava/Universal Republic. The follow-up to BLACK VEIL BRIDES‘ 2014 self-titled effort was produced by John Feldmann at his Southern California studio.
