SUICIDE SILENCE Dug Deep For Inspiration For Upcoming Album

Metal Wani recently conducted an interview with guitarist Mark Heylmun of California deathcore masters SUICIDE SILENCE. You can now listen to the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On the status of the next SUICIDE SILENCE album:

Mark: “We are just working on being able to find out when we’re gonna be able to release it, when we’re gonna be able to put it all out. ‘Cause we went in the studio in March. In March, we went in the studio and recorded a bunch of songs with [producer] Ross Robinson. The record is not mixed, it’s not mastered, but it is recorded, and that means that there’s a bunch of new SUICIDE SILENCE music in the ether of the universe, floating around. And, basically, everybody should just be kind of getting ready to hear some new shit. The new SUICIDE SILENCE is very close to being released — at least a couple of songs.”

On how the new SUICIDE SILENCE material compares to the band’s previous efforts:

Mark: “It’s the furthest we’ve dove into ourselves as a band and as individual artists. We really went into this record as if it was going to be… With no intention of calling the band quits, we kind of just put it out, saying, ‘If we all died after this record came out… Let’s just pretend that this is the last thing we’re ever gonna be able to write. Don’t hold anything back. Just go for it. Play what fucking you feel and let your heart kind of be the guide of it.’ And it was a very fun process to put together and to work on, but at the same time, it was one of those things where we were an open book for each other and the songs we were writing and the topics of it were very personal. And the SUICIDE SILENCE record that you’ll hear… We’re not really kids anymore, so this record is where we’re at now, what we’ve been through, and it’s gonna be an adventure; it’s a journey. I mean, I’ve got the record right now on my phone, and I still am listening to it every day, ’cause I love it so much. And it’s not even mixed yet.”

On whether SUICIDE SILENCE felt any pressure following up 2014’s “You Can’t Stop Me” album, which marked the band’s first release with vocalist Hernan “Eddie” Hermida following the passing of Mitch Lucker:

Mark: “It’s really fucking awesome and something that we can be really grateful for that people like our music, and when we put out a record, the way that people respond to it is going to be a reflection of the way that they will respond to the next record, so having the response on this record be the way that it was, we were already very aware that the second record with the new vocalist is gonna be looked at with just as much scrutiny and as much of a microscope. After ‘You Can’t Stop Me’, we couldn’t wait to get in the studio to be able to write this record that we just did now. That’s the joy of being in a band and having this outlet of creativity. If you don’t get out of the studio and look forward to doing that again, then you’re in the wrong business. So that’s where we’re at — we’re always stoked and always looking forward to the next step. And, yeah, this one is gonna be one for people to listen to and be, like, ‘Holy fuck! They just went from this to this, and I can’t believe how awesome this is.’ And it’s always because of the record you did before; you’re only as good as your last record. We’re always just trying to build, trying to grow and trying to use what we’ve gone through as past experiences to influence the music and to keep it fresh. So this will be newest, most fresh SUICIDE SILENCE you’ve heard in quite a while.”

On Hernan “Eddie” Hermida working on a new album with ALL SHALL PERISH while still being involved with SUICIDE SILENCE:

Mark: “Who knows, really, when that [new ALL SHALL PERISH] record will get done? I think that they’re pretty much… I don’t know what they’re really saying, but I know that they’re gonna work on that record for a while; they’re gonna take their time. And it’s still in the early stages, so I don’t really see it [being released] before our record is coming out.”

“You Can’t Stop Me” was released in July 2014 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

Lucker died November 1, 2012 after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle crash in Huntington Beach that Halloween night.
