METALLICA Rocks 75,000 Fans In First Irish Concert In A Decade

Around 75,000 fans attended METALLICA concert Saturday night (June 8) at the iconic venue Slane Castle in Meath, Ireland. The show marked METALLICA‘s first appearance in Ireland since the band played in Belfast in 2010 and Dublin in 2009. The legendary heavy metal act was unable to play in the country during the indoor leg of the “WorldWired” tour last year because of the size of its stage show.

A total of 45 trucks rolled in with the stage and production. “It took 36 hours to build the stage, and a day and a half, including working through darkness, to program the lights, sound and video,” METALLICA‘s production manager John Zajonc told Independent.

U2 bassist Adam Clayton was in attendance last night to watch METALLICA play the stage that his band headlined in 2001.

Frontman James Hetfield told the crowd: “I’ve got the best job in the world — I get to play music to people and see their faces change.

“Slane is beautiful. We love it. Thanks, Lord [Henry]. We love what you’ve done with the place.”

Drummer Lars Ulrich later wrote on Instagram: “Slane Castle has been rocked… and what an unbelievable vibe!! As incredible as we were told to expect… the second we stepped on stage and took it all in, the Irish fans, the castle, the bowl like setting, we knew this was otherworldly. What a privilege and an honor to play this legendary venue. Thank you, Lord Henry, for having us, and thanks to everyone who came from near and far! All 75,000 of ya… WOW!! Let’s not wait another 10 years, Ireland.”

Supporting METALLICA at the show were FANGCLUB, BOKASSA, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS and GHOST.

METALLICA is continuing to tour in support of its latest album, “Hardwired… To Self-Destruct”, which came out in November 2016.

The “WorldWired” tour has played more than 130 shows across the world since its 2016 kick-off.
