Una chiacchierata con Maria McTurk, storica backin' vocal dei Royal Hunt... e molto altro!!!

E’ trascorso un mese dall’ultima volta che ho sentito Maria McTurk cantare durante un live. La prima volta è stata a Milano, avevo 15 anni, ed anche in quell’occasione era sul palco come corista. Grande cantante, bellissima donna, sembrerebbe che l’arte e la musica preservino la tua giovinezza!

Grazie, mi sento lusingata da un tale complimento, ma probabilmente hai ragione! La musica e l’arte mi aiutano a restare giovane.

Ho letto qua e là qualcosa sulla tua formazione come cantante. Hai ricevuto un’educazione molto severa, non è così? Com’è iniziato il tuo percorso?

Sono stata cresciuta sia in severità che in libertà. Durante la mia infanzia ho ascoltato moltissima opera lirica, musica classica e jazz. Il pop ed il rock li ho scoperti non prima della mia adolescenza. E mi sono rifiutata di cantare per un sacco di anni! Mamma e papà si sono accorti del mio talento che avevo 4 anni, erano davvero entusiasti di questo, anche troppo per me, e così evitavo per timidezza. Cantavo per lo più quand’ero da sola, e poi all’età di 13 anni mi sono unita a un coro. E da lì, non mi sono mai più fermata. Ecco perchè, come ti ho detto, ho avuto un’educazione sia severa che libera, crescevo in fretta, e volevo fare quante più esperienze possibili, in particolare modo nel mondo della musica. I miei genitori hanno assecondato la mia passione.

C’è qualche episodio che ricordi in particolare? Bhe, anche più di uno…

La maggior parte delle persone è stata sempre molto carina e gentile con me. Tantissimo duro lavoro, bei momenti un pò meno, ma penso di aver deciso di metterci una pietra sopra, perchè tenersi i brutti ricordi?
Sono molto contenta per tutte le opportunità di esibirmi dal vivo avute fino ad ora. E sono fermamente convinta del fatto che atteggiamento positivo, prospettive lineari e senso dell’umorismo mi abbiano portato dove sono ora, in questo momento.

Ho un sacco di ricordi di grandi musicisti con cui ho cantato e suonato, insieme al pubblico, ovviamente :-) senza di loro non sarei in grado di cantare come oggi! Oltyre che le circostanze che mi hanno portato a suonare coi Royal Hunt. Quando percepisci l’energia che scaturisce dal pubblico, il loro amore e la loro gioia, bhe quello per me è il massimo. non mi stancherei mai di partire in tour coi Royal Hunt. Siamo amici da lunghissimo tempo, oltre che una famiglia. Siamo specializzati a trasformare i momenti più fastidiosi in qualcosa di speciale e indimenticabile :) Non mi sono mai sciallata così tanto come con loro. Adoro la band, la musica che si fa, e lo spirito!
Ci sono stati grandi momenti anche con altri musicisti, comunque.

Tutti noi conosciamo la tua voce angelica. Che cosa ci racconti di altre tue capacità? Suoni anche altri strumenti?

Suono la chitarra e utilizzo il piano sia quando compongo che qualche volta per insegnare canto. Ma preferisco fare ciò che mi viene meglio, e lasciare che i grandi musicisti facciano altrettanto coi loro strumenti, ecco.

Quali sono le tue cantanti preferite? Quelle che ti hanno maggiormente ispirata e ti hanno dato il calcio d’inizio?

Bhe alcune sono:
Sarah Vaughn, Maria Callas, Dolly Parton, Nina Hagen, Kate Bush, Mariah Carry, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Sheryl crow, Nikka Costa, Rickie Lee Jones, Pink, Sia, Astrud Gilberto, Diana Krall. Lisa Nilsson, Mary J. Blige e tantissime altre….
Alcune hanno sempre fatto parte della mia vita, altre sono arrivate dopo, lungo il cammino… e la lista si infittisce. Ne avrei anche di maschili da elencare.

Come sei entrata in contatto coi Royal Hunt? Se non vado errando, in quel periodo ti stavi dando al jazz… Come facevi a dedicarti a così tanti generi musicali?

Si, cantavo un sacco jazz, pop e anche country quando ho incontrato Andersen, negli anni 90. Suonavo la chitarra e cantavo in una band, e avevamo registrato una demo nel suo vecchio studio. Mi aveva chiesto se avevo voglia di incidere qualche coro su un pezzo, per la precisione Epilogue. Ho iniziato a cantare con loro appena dopo il loro debutto live.

Ho iniziato con la classica e poi proseguito con il jazz. Poi pop e successivamente rock.
Uno stile non esclude l’altro. Ho cantato in un concerto jazz appena dopo il tour coi Royal Hunt, e ne farò altri lungo tutta l’estate.

Com’è girare il mondo in tour?

Magnifico, fantastico
Ogni volta è diverso, alle volte anche faticoso. Viaggiare contro il tempo e perdere un sacco di ore di sonno. Ma ogni momento è indimenticabile.
Ho visto Giappone e Russia per la settima volta, e la Corea del Sud per la prima volta. Seoul è una città stupenda. Lo stesso vale per l’Europa, e l’Italia, che amo davvero molto.

E poi ti sei messa a lavoro su te stessa, esprimendo appieno il tuo io anche come autrice in più contesti. Dicci qualcosa a riguardo, mostraci la vera Maria Mc Turk.

Ho sempre voluto fare un album pop solista. Mi sono messa in contatto con Anders Ringman, i suoi lavori mi sono piaciuti moltissimo, sia per la musica che per i testi. Il mio album è stato realizzato con la sua collaborazione. L’ha prodotto lui, scrivendo la maggior parte della musica. Sapevo che per me sarebbe stata una nuova sfida, il cantare pop come ho fatto in quell’album, senza fare tutto da me. Cantare jazz significa essere molto più liberi, essere per lo più solisti, ed è molto diverso dal dedicarsi ai cori.
Ci siamo incontrati a Copenhagen e abbiamo iniziato a lavorare sul materiale. Ad oggi, è stata la mia più grossa scommessa in termini canori, ed ora sto lavorando al nuovo album. Il mio album “This Little Light Of Mine” sarà disponibile sul mercato alla fine di quest’anno.
Lo stiamo mixando nuovamente per dargli il sound che si merita

La tua canzone, quella di cui vai più fiera. E perchè.

Tutte, tutte, ma quella che amo alla follia è “Different As We Are” perchè parla di rimanere fedeli a sè stessi quando si ha una relazione, e stare attenti ai compromessi e gli equilibri di cui si ha bisogno quando si ha un partner che vive accanto a te. Poi
“Love is”, che parla dell’amore in tutte le sue prospettive – amore passionale ed universale. Anders ed io ne abbiamo scritto il testo dopo litrate di vino la prima volta che ci siamo incontrati!

Tutti i pezzi mi stanno a cuore, perchè sono finestre sulla mia vita. Sicuramente chi li ascolterà avrà le proprie.

Hai qualche altra ambizione in termini musicali? Altri sogni da realizzare?

Ho sempre troppi sogni per la testa e troppe idee. Haha!
Finora ritengo di aver fatto un sacco di cose in campo musicale, ma penso che il mio sogno sia non smettere mai di cantare.
Il sogno per ora è fare quante più date possibili di supporto al mio album, quando sarà nuovamente disponibile, e poi mettermi a lavori sui pezzi nuovi per il prossimo album.

It’s always somehow impressing to see you on stage. Such a great singer, beautiful woman, it really seems that arts are keeping you always young!

I read something about your history as a singer. You had a very strict education, isn’t it? How did everything start?

My education was both strict and loose. In my childhood l did listen to a lot of opera, classic and jazz. Pop and rock was actually something I first discovered in my teen years. And I actually refused to sing for many years because my parents realized I had a talent at the age of four. Their happiness must have been too much for me and I was shy about it. I mostly sang by myself and eventually joined a choir by the age of 13. And ever since then, I never stopped. My upbringing was, as I wrote, strict and loose in that way, that I grew up fast and wanted to try as much as possible – specially in the music world. My parents let me follow my passion.

Is there a particular episode you remember? Maybe more than just one…

Most of my life people have been helpful and great to me. I could mention a lot of hard work and less good moments but I guess I have chosen to forget it, why collect bad memories?
I am very thankful for all my opportunities live has given me so far. And I truly believe that a positive attitude with some healthy perspective (and humor) has brought me where I am today.

A lot of memories are the great musicians I have singed and played with over the years and of course the audience :) without them I wouldn’t be singing the way I do today! And that of course bring me to singing with Royal Hunt. When you feel the energy from the crowd, their love and happiness – that’s highlight for me. I also never get tired of touring with the guys in RH. They are my long time friends and family. Mostly we manage to make the most boring moment into something special and unforgettable :) I never laugh as much as with RH. I love the band, the music and the spirit!
Of course I have had great moments with other musicians as well.

We all know that you can sing as the purest angel. What about any other instruments you can play with?

I play guitar and use piano for songwriting and sometimes teaching in singing. I prefer to do what I am best at and let the great musicians I do what they do best

Which are your favorite female singers, the ones that gave you inspiration and the will to start and go on with this?

Some of them are:

Some of them has been in my life from the start and some later in life but… the list goes on. And there are just as many male musicians and singer I could mention too.

How did you enter in contact with Royal Hunt? If I’m not wrong, in that period you were singing jazz… How did you manage such a different range of music genres?

I sang a lot of jazz, pop and country when I met Andre Andersen around 90. I was playing guitar and singing in a band and we did a demo in his old studio. He asked me if I wanted to do some back up singing on a number. It was Epilogue. I started to sing with them just after their debut concert.

I started singing classical and then later jazz. Then pop and rock.
One style doesn’t leave out another. I did a jazz concert before I toured with Royal Hunt and will do some more over the summer.

How was touring all over the world?

Wonderful, fantastic
It also would be a bit hard from time to time. Flying over time zones and loosing a lot of sleep. But still I loved every moment.
I got to see Japan and Russia for the 7 time and South Korea for the first time. Seoul is an amazing city. And of course Europe – and Italy that I truly love so much.

And then, you started to work on yourself, giving complete expression to your soul also as songwriter in many different situations. Tell us everything about it, let us enter in the core of Maria Mc Turk.

I always wanted to do a solo album with great pop songs. I got contact to Anders Ringman and I really loved his work as a songwriter. We did my album together. He produced it and wrote most of the music. I knew it was a new challenge for me to sing pop the way I did it on the album, not controlling it myself. Singing jazz you just sing a lot more loose as a soloist – it is a very different thing as singing backing.
We met in Copenhagen and starting writing songs and lyrics. It has so far been the biggest singing challenge for me and I am working on a new album now. My album “This Little Light Of Mine” will be re-released later this year.
I am getting it re-mixed to give it the sound it really deserves

The song you wrote that you are particularly proud of. And why.

All of them but,
I really love “Different As We Are” because it’s about how to stay true to yourself in a relationship and still balance the compromises you need when you live with a partner.
“Love is” is about love in all perspectives – passion and universal. Anders and I wrote the lyrics over lots of wine the first time we met!

All the songs are close to my heart because they are stories from my own life. Hopefully the listener will have his or her own stories too.

Is there something else you would like to do, musically speaking? Any other dreams to realize?

I always have a lot of dreams and too many ideas. Haha!
I have done so many great, wonderful, crazy -and less great too, thing so far musically. I think the my dream is to continue to sing.
And the dream right now is to do more concerts with my album, when it is getting re-released and then start the work on new songs for the next album.
