Gradevole sorpresa questa dei brasiliani Hibria, attivi dal 1996 e finalmente giunti al contratto discografico per la Remedy Records. La proposta non sarà certo il massimo dell’originalità (un heavy metal non convenzionale che spesso pesca a piene mani dal power-speed con qualche breve accenno al prog) ma di certo “Defying the rules” ha tutte le carte in regola per essere apprezzato dagli amanti del genere … e perchè no, a tutti coloro i quali non disdegnano musica bella potente, veloce e ricca di tante squisitezze a livello tecnico.
Grande la voce di Iuri Sanson, così come invidiabile è la tecnica dei due chitarristi… e perchè no, anche la sezione ritmica risulta bella varia, potente e precisa…. insomma un lavoro formalmente più che discreto. Già dalle iniziali e potenti “Steel Lord Of Wheels” e “Change Your Life Line” l’influenza dei Judas Priest si fa sentire… così come quella degli Angra, degli Helloween e di tutto l’heavy power più moderno. Di classe gli assoli di chitarra che, anche se un pò troppo malmsteeniani, riescono comunque a colpire sia per una tecnica più che invidiabile che per gusto melodico così come per il bassista, che spesso si lancia in duelli all’ultimo sangue con i due chitarristi o, più semplicemente, in fasi solistiche.
Difficile trovare pecche in “Defying The Rules” se non per quanto riguarda l’originalità… ma brani come “Millenium Quest”, la title-track, “A Kingdom To Share” sono gradevoli da ascoltare e davvero capaci di far saltare dalla sedia anche l’ascoltatore più scettico e meno convinto.
Per essere un debutto “Defying The Rules” è davvero un buon lavoro che lascia ben sperare sul futuro di questa giovane band.
