John Golden‘s Madcap Music Review conducted an interview with bassist Frank Bello of ANTHRAX at this past January’s NAMM show in Anaheim, California. Frank discusses his signature ESP bass, how IRON MAIDEN‘s Steve Harris influenced his design of his bass, he hints about secret plans for RUSH‘s 40th anniversary tour, and demonstrates his bass by playing the ANTHRAX song “Caught In A Mosh”.

Speaking about his signature bass, Frank said: “For me, it’s about knowledge, man. I wanna push the envelope. I wanna push it and I wanna help people. If I can experiment with stuff and say, ‘This works. This doesn’t work.’ You know what I mean?! It’s about paying it forward now at this point.”

He continued: “I’ve had a fortunate career; I’ve been really lucky along the way. I know that. I’ve been really fortunate. So if I can help anybody, even if it’s just a beginning player, take that next step and not be intimidated and get a quality product. For me, it’s all about getting the product into their hands and making the music.”

Bello added: “Look, the bottom line is you don’t make a lot of money selling basses. That’s the truth. My thing is, young players, old players, it doesn’t matter, get it into their hands and let them see for themselves. When they try it, they usually find that they like this bass. So that’s what it’s about.”
