According to The Pulse Of Radio, ex-GUNS N’ ROSES drummer Steven Adler‘s mother revealed in an interview with the New York Post that she believes the methods used to help him kick his addiction to heroin were ultimately just as dangerous for her son. Speaking with the newspaper about her new memoir, Deanna Adler recalled that after Steve was arrested in 1995 for driving under the influence, he was led to the services of Dr. Howard Kornfeld, a rehab specialist.

According to Deanna, Kornfeld‘s treatment of her son included the drummer being prescribed more than 60 medications at once. Deanna said that after she saw the first pharmacy bill, which climbed to more than $2,000, she thought, “‘What kind of scam was this? What the hell was going on?'”

Kornfeld‘s name might be familiar to fans of a pop star who didn’t shake his addiction: Prince. The doctor sent a member of his team to meet with Prince in the days before his death last April.

Kornfeld did not respond to the Post‘s request for comment, but Deanna Adler added: “I could not fathom, and they never answered to my satisfaction, why they needed to have two different types of psychotics, or three different sleeping-aid medications or five different types of painkillers. Even I know you shouldn’t mix Darvocet, Percodan and Tylenol with codeine.”

Steven Adler has been sober for several years, but spent a long time battling his addiction, ever since being thrown out of GUNS N’ ROSES in 1990 because of it.

He performed with the band for a handful of guest appearances during its reunion tour last year, but has not played a full show with GUNS N’ ROSES in more than two and a half decades.

Deanna‘s book, “Sweet Child Of Mine: How I Lost My Son To Guns N’ Roses”, came out this past Tuesday (January 24).
