In a brand new interview with Maxim, Sammy Hagar once again spoke about a hypothetical VAN HALEN reunion tour with both him and David Lee Roth on vocals. Asked if he has been approached and would he do it, Hagar said: “First of all, I have not been approached. Secondly, it was my idea to have Dave and I go out on tour, so if everyone was happy and behind the idea a hundred percent — no egos, no grudges — then, of course, I would be into it… but only with Michael Anthony on bass. That’s what the fans want, and I know we could give them one of the greatest rock setlists of all time.”

He continued: “We’re in a fortunate place with the band because all of the original guys are still here. We could reunite — singing and playing the way it should be. It couldn’t get any better than that. But we’ll see.”

Hagar, who has made in-roads in patching up his relationship with Eddie Van Halen in the past few years, hasn’t made music with Eddie or Alex Van Halen since his final tour with VAN HALEN back in 2004.

During an episode of his “Top Rock Countdown” radio show, Hagar said that he would be willing to “go through negotiations” to make a reunion tour happen. He said: “Ed and Al are brothers and they’re really tight and they’re hard to deal with because they’re not straight up all time, so, they’ll tell you one thing and the next day, you look at what they said you said and you say [laughs], ‘Wait a minute, that’s not what I understood,’ and then you go back and forth. But for that, I would put in the effort and roll up my sleeves if everybody was interested, because that, that. . . c’mon, it would be awesome.”

Hagar explained how the band could tackle a live show covering both eras of the band. “See, I don’t wanna go out there and stand around with Dave, y’know, and dance and stuff. I’d rather just be out there — when I’m out there, he goes out there; we take turns,” he said. “And so it’d be great — he’d go out and do two songs, go smoke a cigarette, I go out and do two songs, I’ll go back, have a drink [laughs], he’d go back out there. . . back and forth all night. It would be awesome. And if we could come out [together] at the end, yeah — but I don’t see that happening. The competition of that would be great, if you think about it [laughs], y’know? It would elevate the whole damn thing. Ed, Al and Mike — just play as hard as you can all the time, whatever, but Dave could finish with, like, ‘Panama’ and ‘Runnin’ With The Devil’, and I’ll be going, ‘Damn!’ [Laughs] ‘I’ve got to step it up, y’know?’ So I think it would be cause for some good, good entertainment.”

In 2007, the Van Halen brothers, Wolfgang Van Halen and Roth announced they would be hitting the road for a reunion tour. Anthony later told Music Radar that he “found out about that tour like everybody else did — in the press.”

Anthony has played primarily with Hagar in the thirteen years since he last performed with VAN HALEN, in groups like CHICKENFOOT and THE CIRCLE.
