PHIL ANSELMO On Recording New SUPERJOINT Music - "With Every Jam Session It Gets Closer And Closer"

With his shaved head and a sleeveless black Discharge shirt revealing two burly and extensively tattooed arms, Phil Anselmo probably doesn’t fit your profile of a small business owner. Yet in recent years the notorious frontman behind multi-platinum 90s metal band Pantera has focused much of his attention on Housecore Records, his independent record label specializing in heavy music by a number of handpicked bands as well as his own projects.

“It’s a labor of love,” he tells Forbes.com. “It’s a money pit right now.”

Later in the interview, Anselmo admits he’s looking forward to getting back home to Louisiana, both to record new music with Superjoint at Nodferatu’s Lair and give his bad knee a rest. “With every jam session it gets closer and closer,” he says. ”I feel good about it.”

In a recent interview with Metal Wani, Anselmo discusses how fans responded to Superjoint’s music on their recent tour, sharing stage with Danzig, how he varies his vocals between Superjoint, Down and The Illegals, Superjoint new album songwriting, how important it is for the band to keep the sound intact, his opinion on why European fans could not connect to Phil Anselmo as compared to fans in US, his health issues and much more.

On living up to fans’ expectations with Superjoint’s new music: “Well, all you can do is be as true to the project as the former records are. You have to get back in the room with the guys that you… my main guys that always, always, always – as far as writing goes for Superjoint – would be me and Jimmy Bower, and then, of course, Kevin Bond. And now we’ve got all the members in place that we want. I will say that it did take us a little while, and a few practices, to really get back into that feel again and understand the true feeling of Superjoint. And the best thing about that is that I think that right now, the stuff that we have written is very close — it’s very, very close, musically. I think we’ve got some stuff that is very true to the Superjoint sound and the Superjoint feel. So I’m very happy with that. And I’m in the band. So if I’m happy, and the rest of the guys are happy, and everybody’s feeling it, then it must be true.”
