This Friday (December 4th) at 6 PM, EST, the University of Puerto Rico will host an academic conference entitled Metal Islands: Culture, History and Politics In Caribbean Heavy Metal Music. The event will be broadcast live at this location.
This event is a conference and roundtable discussion addressing the varied manifestation of heavy metal music in the Caribbean, specifically Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Participants will discuss the role of local culture, history and politics in shaping their respective scenes and vice versa. Dr. Nelson Varas-Diaz, Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, will describe the ongoing efforts to study heavy metal music in the region and will be joined by members of the international bands Tendencia (Cuba), Abaddon RD (Dominican Republic) and Dantesco (Puerto Rico) for a collective reflection on the subject.
