MAT SINNER On New PRIMAL FEAR Album 'Apocalypse': 'At The Moment, It Is Not The Right Time To Write 11 Love Songs'

PRIMAL FEAR bassist Mat Sinner says the band’s forthcoming “Apocalypse” studio album is inspired by the current turbulent state of the world, noting that “it is not the right time to write 11 love songs.”

In an interview with Hayley Leggs at this year’s Hellfest, which was held last month in Clisson, France, Sinner, along with guitarist Tom Naumann, was asked about “Apocalypse”, which is the German power metallers’ 12th studio album to date. “It’s called ‘Apocalypse’ because the world is in a strange situation everywhere, so everywhere there is some kind of hate and rough language and that,” he explained (see video below). “So, we used the possibility of releasing an album to write lyrics about what we don’t like. At the moment, it is not the right time to write 11 love songs. We don’t hate. We just say be careful what we’re going to do here. It’s a nice planet. We can live a nice life if we make it good. It’s about hate and religion, terrorism, politicians, egos, it’s all about that.”

Sinner, whose real name is Mattias Lasch and also leads his long-running namesake hard rock band SINNER, was asked about PRIMAL FEAR‘s longevity considering they recently eclipsed the two-decade mark as a band. Formed by Sinner in 1997 as an outlet for vocalist Ralf Scheepers (who had left GAMMA RAY and was a rumored candidate for the then-open JUDAS PRIEST vocal spot, but was considering early retirement from metal), PRIMAL FEAR has emerged as one of the most consistent European metal bands, rarely straying from its core PRIEST-styled power metal sound. Mat said: “Regarding other bands, we still talk to each other. And, we love our job and we like to write songs and we love the music we do, so we can write music we love. So this is the best job we can have.”

“Apocalypse” will be released August 10 via Frontiers Music Srl. Production of the record started at the end of 2017 and was wrapped by spring 2018 at Hansen Studios in Denmark with producer Sinner and engineer/mixer Jacob Hansen.
