With singles like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and albums like “Nevermind” that have topped the music charts, NIRVANA is one of the most respected bands of all time. Credited with helping to popularize the alternative rock genre, the American rock band has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades over the years, including being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2014 (their first year of eligibility).

“I Found My Friends: The Oral History Of Nirvana” (St. Martin’s Griffin/Thomas Dunne Books; March 31, 2015) by Nick Soulsby follows the band year by year, tour by tour, recreating the short and tempestuous times of NIRVANA entirely through the words of the musicians and producers who played and interacted with the band. The guides for this trip didn’t just watch the life of this legendary band — they lived it.

Soulsby interviewed 210 musicians from 170 bands — including groups such as HOLE, MUDHONEY, MEAT PUPPETS, BUTTHOLE SURFERS and THE JESUS LIZARD — over two-thirds of all the bands who played with NIRVANA 1987-1994. The tale is told entirely through their memories and experiences.

“I Found My Friends” follows NIRVANA on each step of their journey, reliving their sudden rise to stardom. Twenty-one years after lead singer Kurt Cobain‘s tragic death on April 5, 1994, Soulsby removes the posthumous halo from the brow of Cobain and travels back through time to observe one of rock and roll’s most critical bands as no one has ever seen them before.

Nick Soulsby is the author of “Dark Slivers: Seeing Nirvana In The Shards Of Incesticide” and blogs about the band on his web site, Nirvana-Legacy.com.
