Nev Pearce of Australia’s “Rabid Noise” podcast recently conducted an interview with guitarist Bill Steer of reactivated British extreme metal pioneers CARCASS. You can now listen to the chat below.

Asked if CARCASS has any plans to record a follow-up to 2013’s “Surgical Steel” album, Steer said: “We do. [There is] nothing concrete [in the works], though. It’s really early stages. But Dan [drummer Daniel Wilding] and myself have got together a few times and blasted through some new tunes. And I’d imagine in the summer, when the festival season is on, we’ll have a little bit of time during the weekdays to work on more stuff. And we’ll just do it as we feel it, really.”

He continued: “I couldn’t tell you exactly when we’ll start work proper in terms of recording, ’cause that’s a long way off. And the one thing we don’t wanna do is rush, because if we’re gonna take the trouble to make a new album, it has to be worthwhile. We can’t really just play it safe and do a similar kind of recipe to the previous record. It’s got to be substantially different. Yeah, I guess we’re just very aware of what the best use of [our] time is. And to make another album, it’s something we’d love to do, but we’re not gonna take it lightly, if you know what I mean.”

Steer also said that he was pleased with the response to “Surgical Steel” but that there is always room for improvement. “We’re still relatively satisfied with that record, but, at the same time, there are things we would do differently now,” he explained. “I think that’s really what happens every time you make a recording; you come away with a few little lessons you’ve learned, and hopefully you’ll be able to apply some of those next time around.”

“Surgical Remission / Surplus Steel”, a collection of previously unreleased and hard-to-find tracks from CARCASS, sold around 1,840 copies in the U.S. in its first week of release to land at position No. 27 on the Billboard Hard Rock chart. All the songs on the EP were recorded during the “Surgical Steel” sessions, which was produced by Colin Richardson (NAPALM DEATH, BOLT THROWER, GOREFEST, CANNIBAL CORPSE, SINISTER, RODRIGO Y GABRIELA) and mixed/mastered by Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, ACCEPT, EXODUS, TESTAMENT).

“Surgical Remission / Surplus Steel” was made available on physical and digital formats via Nuclear Blast.

Joining Steer, Wilding and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker in CARCASS‘ current incarnation is guitarist Ben Ash (PIG IRON, DESOLATION, LIQUEFIED SKELETON).

“Surgical Steel” sold around 8,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 41 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was released on September 16, 2013 in the U.K., September 13, 2013 in the rest of Europe and September 17, 2013 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records.
