26) VENOM – From The Very Depths (Spinefarm)

British black metal pioneers Venom released their 14 studio album, From The Very Depths, in January. Vocalist/bassist and original Venom titan, Cronos rembarked: This album is perfect, all three members are totally over-the-top confident with the new songs and the production. We had a great atmosphere in the studio while we were recording. Dante created pure thunder from his drums, while Rage tears the flesh off your face with his riffs, making everything fall into place so well. It’s a strong release and really shows the band maturing into an unstoppable force of pure black metal. We can’t wait to play the new songs live for the Legions… Hell Yeah!”

In his 8.0/10 review BraveWords scribe David Perri wrote: Truth be told, From The Very Depths’ spiritual home is 1990-1992, a time when songs were written and re-written and expensive production was still a badge of honour, as From The Very Depths would have been the legitimate middle ground between Black Sabbath’s Dehumanizer and Judas Priest’s Painkiller. From The Very Depths is still able to hold its own in 2015 though, this record a tough, highly listenable effort that reaches its peak on the meticulous “Grinding Teeth” and “Temptation” as well as the soaring title track, these songs conveying the level of ambition that’s so patently obvious here.
